Rapid Transit Video #29 - “For Lovers” by Effort Inc

This film was composed over the course of the Spring of 2009 and edited shortly thereafter.  Featured rivers include Wilson Creek, Watauga Gorge, Nolichucky Gorge, French Broad Ledges and Section 9, Lower Rocky Broad, Raven Fork & Green Narrows.  Most of the footage was shot to show the beauty of run-of-the-mill rapids and the extraordinary kayakers paddling the rapids.

You may preview of the film here by clicking play now or play in popup at the bottom of this post or by subscribing to the Rapid Transit Podcast at iTunes.  The full video is available in my Library.

Putting the Giant to Sleep

June 16th, 2009 by chriswing

picture-1644.jpg
Well, it’s now been 6 months since the conclusion of a 14 day Grand Canyon trip which took place from December 27, 2008 - January 10 2009.  I am happy to say that I am finished with this edit, now in its 5th incarnation.  I’m satisfied as this was my first attempt at a full length feature, and I can say I chalked up a lot of experience with Final Cut and various other software.  My editing has also become much quicker thanks to this project.

Visit my Library to view the film right here on Rapid Transit.  Click HERE.

The beginning of the video you will see a short preview for my next full length project due out at the end of 2009 called the Grand Payoff.  The project stemmed from this project in that I worked a seasonal job (Christmas trees in Atlanta) to fund my trip to the Grand Canyon and the 2009 season on the road.  Once I started this project I realized there was a much larger story to tell and it will encompass several other “starving paddlers” and their stories of survival as a kayaker.

The great music in this video is thanks to a lot of great artists and you should check out their websites and buy their albums…or else.

More to follow soon as I have captured a lot of great footage from being on the road for the past 3 months.  Look forward to getting back to the Southeast!

Several winters ago, as I skied down Deer Valley into the Mokelumne Canyon, the ideal of paddling these upper reaches stuck me.  After looking at topos, and realizing how hideously steep this section is, my obsession waned.  By June 1981 however, the gradient didn’t seem so ridiculous; Chuck , Richard, Don Banducci, Rick Fernald and I put in on a measly 300 cfs.

To the Cali Pioneers; thank you for opening the gates to the heavenly glory called Fantasy Falls.  In the summer of 2008 the T-Dirk crew ventured into the wilderness of Fantasy Falls to celebrate Robin’s 28th birthday.  Here’s some shots of the party unfolding by Bitch Slap Productions and safe lines to all the 2009 Crews putting on with in the week.

The Donkey Show Number 4 - audio podcast - “the birds and the bees of kayak videos”

June 6th, 2009 by effort.tv

It only took us one year to hammer out four episodes.  So much for a regular schedule.  Thanks to the listeners who have stuck it out through thick and thin with us.  This episode runs 58:05 so may need to listen in a couple sittings unless you’re a superfan or you’re on a long drive.

donkeyshow4.jpg

The year of the Donkey has been one to remember, truly making a place for the Donkey Show as a tradition in kayaking.  In this episode we talk about the following…
Intro: Joey and I tell the truth about why this is called the Donkey Show
Email Inbox: We induct the Jackson 4Fun into the Boat Name Hall of Shame
Video Projects: Joey tells about his new film INTERFERENCE and I talk about filming with Anna Levesque for her new Girls At Play, Whitewater Instructional Film.
News: US Freestyle Team Trials was available on Pay Per View.
Music: How it plays into kayak films and the music we are keen on for our films.
Premieres: We talk about how premieres play into the filmmaking process.
Stoked: How kayak films have the power to stoke people.
Broism: Each episode we strike an annoying word or term from the kayaking population’s vocabulary.

You may listen by clicking the small “play now” button below or by subscribing at iTunes.

Thanks to Riverlink, NOC and REI

June 4th, 2009 by effort.tv

Thanks to Riverlink for hosting the film festival at NOC’s Nolichucky outpost on May 26th.  Thanks to NOC for the venue and to REI for the door prizes.  This was a laid back event with great energy, great people and an excellent cause.
Nolichucky Gorge from i-26
Foggy Valley: As I was dropping down into the Noli Gorge on i-26 West I thought that there was maybe a fire.  Once at the bottom I realized it was a huge layer of fog rising up out of the valley.

Onlookers packed into the NOC rafting orientation room for a premiere of a not yet released Rapid Transit Short Film called “For Lovers.”  We also watched an eye-opening, environmental film about the Nolichucky and its water quality.  The finale was THE EDDY FEELING by Rapid Transit.

Thanks again to our gracious hosts.

World Kayak Hometown Throwdown's

May 7th, 2009 by chriswing

throwdown3-0041.jpgI have been privileged in the past year to be directly involved with the development of World Kayak on several levels.  One of the more special facets of World Kayak are the Hometown Throwdown’s.  The idea of the Throwdown’s is to stimulate participation from those that otherwise may not participate in events.  I.e. an event designed and centered around your “weekend warrior” and not your pro athlete.  The environment is low stress and highlighted by peer encouragement.

The event’s are designed in a freestyle format with a modified scoring system where such trick as the “paddle guitar” and “shudder rudder” are not only encouraged for style but rewarded.  However, prizes are given out for participation, not for winning.  New to this year are “Slalom Survivor” events which take traditional slalom events and modify them for fun and challenge.  Imagine Nickelodeon’s Double Dare on the water minus the slime.  My apologies for that analogy, but I grew up with that and that’s what I picture.

Events are free to participate in and every region hosts around 5 events per season.  Check out the link here to see more about the Throwdowns in your region.

The fantastic music in this video short is titled “Shady Shack,” by the Oatmeal Conspiracy. You can check out these guys here.
